Topic: "How my Optimism Helps me Overcome Obstacles……"
Who: Students under the age of 16 years as of December 31, 2011 and who are educated in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean.
Kids Speak Out: Teachers and Youth group leaders can hold their evaluations at any time and request Optimists come to listen.

The Oratorical Contest When: Please submit your application by January 15, 2012. The Optimists will need to know how many students wish to participate because only 10 boys and 10 girls will compete. If necessary, the Optimists will hold preliminary contests at the schools in February. All students will be recognized with certificates and group photos. Ten girls will compete at St. Aloysius Gym, beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning, March 8, 2012; 10 boys will compete at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning, March 15, 2012. All participants receive a certificate. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the three top point scorers. The top medalist advances to zone competition. The silver medalist will advance if the gold medalist is unable to compete. The bronze medalist will advance if either the gold or silver medalist is unable to compete. The oratorical contest participants can come from the Kids Speak out experience.
Rules:
- Contestants must furnish a birth certificate to compete.
- Winners of the local contest advance to the Zone contest.
- Winners of the Zone contest advance to the District contest.
- The speech must be delivered in English.
- All contestants must state the official topic before beginning the speech. Any greeting to the audience should come before stating the topic.
- The speech is to be between 4 and 5 minutes long. Timing begins after the stating of the topic.
- Each contestant shall prepare his or her own speech. The contestant may receive advice.
- No referrence can be made which identifies the student, parents, school, community, sponsoring Optimist club or District.
- Any quotation or copyrighted material used in the speech must be identified verbally during the presentation and in the written copy of the speech with the original author's name.
- The use of props, special costumes or clothing, or the use of prompters will not be permitted. Notes and lecturns may be used.
